Happy New Year!

Hello everyone. Sorry about the lack of updates. Unfortunately I have an immune system condition that can sometimes be a pain in the butt. I experienced a flare up a couple of months ago, and I don't tolerate the medication very well :(

Fortunately I'm feeling much better now. I'm planning on unpacking my painting stuff in the very beginning of 2010, and I have a lot of minis to photograph as well :)

Another old-style deamonette

Still working my way through all those old, prepped minis. Today it's another old deamonette. I'd been looking at the Reaper Master Serie Bright Skin Triad for a while and decided to try it out. It sure is bright! The effect is quite interesting. It has a lot more contrast than when shows on the picture. I'm not sure what I'd use it for other than deamons and maybe 80's clothing...

Volkov, Great Bear

Yeah, ugly sculpt. What has happened to me? I will actually paint a figure because of it's rules in a game. Oh snap!

Autumn Deamonette

Another one of those minis that was prepped and primed way back when I started painting (around 2000, I think it was). I decided to go for an autumn theme. I used the Skullcraft kit for the base: Texture paste, autumn leaves, and the reindeer moss. Great stuff!

Emli

Another OOP (sadly) Spyglass sculpt. I'm enjoying painting drow skintones, but I hate trying to photograph the minis. It's almost impossible.

Widowmaker Captain

Yep, another green/grey one. I'm leaving for the tournament today, so I won't have my whole army painted (haha, who was expecting that anyway?). Not sure if I'm going to take a break from painting Warmachine when I get back. We shall see.

Fighting those bad habits!

Back when I painted for publication work, I had the terrible habit of painting only the part of the mini that would be photographed. For example this poor elf for the Celtos Sidhe army book (which was never published btw.... booooo!).

Front: Not too bad, eh? Nice nail polish too.

Back: Not so great.... though the nice nail polish saves the day

I have 3 or 4 other minis like this, and I've decided that they will be painted. Completely! It will be a challenge because these "paintjobs" are old, and I don't have the same paints now, but it will be done! Stay tuned for the finished Irdril.

WIP Kodiak

Yep, still working on the warmachine stuff. I think I'm getting faster. A couple of WIP pics of my Kodiak warjack:

Liralith Redux

After all that grey and green army painting I needed some color. When I want to relax painting something, I often choose a Hasslefree mini since those tend to have simple, clean lines and good definition. I always loved the original Liralith mini, and the redux version is even better. I wanted to do a really dramatic red. The highlights on her lower legs look a little strange because her legs have edges (?).

WIP terrain and manhunter

I was browsing the Armorcast website and found a basin they made with Hirst Arts blocks. I thought that was an idea worth stealing, so I convinced my boy friend that we had to make a copy. We did 6 or 7 casts of the two Hirst Art molds with the pipes. In the end we had enough blocks to make another piece of terrain. The two are part of a water treatment plant. I imagine the basin is a sediment basin and the other piece is a filtration system. After the basin is painted; I'm going to pour some resin in there to make it look like water.

I'm also working on a manhunter for my Warmachine army. This sculpt is so dumb. If the male manhunter was running around wearing fur and a naked belly, it wouldn't be considered cool, but for the female it's expected....

WIP Destroyer

I'm painting as fast as I can to get an army ready for a tournament in August. Unfortunately "as fast as I can" isn't very fast...

World Heavyweight Champion!

He does look like a boxer, doesn't he? Or a wrestler maybe. I'm pretty happy with the paintjob. For miniatures of this size, I don't like too extreme shading/highlighting. The skin is already a little too contrasty when I look at it in real life.

Kommander Sorscha

I love this figure. Her outfit is what I want to wear when I grow up. I'm very concerned about gaming with her though. Even though her weapon is pinned, I'm not sure how well it'll hold up.

Clergy Ann

One of the best sculpts in the Dark Age range. She is simply beautiful (though her gloves hand is a little large).

Dark Age Sawblade

I'm loving the Dark Age Brood minis. I think they're very unique and fun to paint. I get to play with lots of different effects.

On this guy I experimented with shading metallics. I used GW washes, Vallejo smoke, Vallejo Brown Glaze and Reaper Master Series Rush Brown and Chestnut for the rust effects.

I'm really looking forward to being able to field a fully painted Dark Age army!

Melisande

My little pirate! I'm quite happy with the pants and coat and the NMM, not quite as happy with her hands (not enough definition), the hat (same) and the hair (sloppy). The base is moderately ugly.

My photography is definitely getting better. The only huge issues I still have is skintones. Comparering these pictures with the WIP one taken with flash, the skintones on the WIP have way more depth. Not sure how to fix that though.

More WIP

This is one the figures sculpted for the Chick Challenge. I don't know if that "contest" is still going. I hope it is. It was great fun.

The figure was sculpted by Steve Buddle, and he did an amazing job. I love this mini so much. I hope I can do it justice.

I painted the skin using Reaper's Olive Skin triad. I'm really liking it so far.

Stripper Jade

This, ladies and gents, is not what matte varnish is supposed to do.

Jade is going in the stripper cup.

Yes, I'm angry!

Look! It's Pudsie!

He's a pud thrower from Dark Age. I painted him for my own army.

Mr. Pudsie, still WIP

Mr. Pudsie here is quite a pain. I'm not happy with how the skin turned out. When I paint the next one, I'll switch the order of the highlights and the glazes. I'm having a hard time getting used to the new GW washes. The pigmentation is just weird. It makes it hard to decide if they should be dilluted or not.

I also managed to place a couple of red fingerprints courtesy of Vallejo Red glaze on this little jerk. Good news is that I managed to control my temper and I did not go into a nerd rage because of it. I really must be getting older and wiser.

I'm going to try really, really hard to finish this one up by tomorrow. I have to go on a business trip Wednesday, and I want him to be done by then!

WIP Pud Thrower

Playing around with the GW washes. This guys desperately needs a coat of matte varnish on the skin. I thought the new washes were supposed to be matte : /

A varnish incident

I finished Jade last night. She was actually quite fun to paint and I got to play with my new GW washes a lot. Today was matte varnish day. I used my W&N brush on matte varnish and made sure to shake it for a loooooong time. I tested it a little on her base, and it looked fine. When I applied it to the mini it resulted in a minor disaster. The varnish seemed to dissolve the thin layers of inks and paint and it started peeling off. I was able to save the paintjob with the help of Vallejo red glaze, but she is still shiny :(

Reaper WIPs

The skin looks terrible on this one. I'm not sure I'm going to bother with fixing it. Might just finish it and see how she looks.
I'm more happy with this one. I need to fix her eye and I had some trouble with blending her pants (stupid old paints), but I like the coat.

Just need a bit of basework and some pictures that aren't taken using flash :)

WIP Kalee

Phew, finished that horrid dragonfly girl. Not my greatest paintjob of all time, but I think it turned out decent. Pics to come. For now, here is a picture of the WIP Kalee. I think the flash is washing out her skin big time. I'm playing around with some SE-NMM. Not sure I'm convinced.

Ahhhh WIPs

FRUSTRATING. I will never be friends with this gal. I want her out of my life. I had another grainy paint incident while doing the shading on the blue. Not fun.

Managed to finish the little Nubian (or Boobian) warrior from Hasslefree. Lovely little sculpt
